Rep. Frankel Statement on Supreme Court Decision Gutting Affirmative Action

Today, Representative Lois Frankel (FL-22) released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to strike down affirmative action programs in higher education.

“Diversity is good for everyone,” said Rep. Frankel. “This decision is a huge step backward from all the progress we’ve made in the last 60 years, especially for women and people of color. Classrooms that represent a diversity of cultures, perspectives, and life stories improve the learning experience for all students. I appreciate President Biden’s commitment that the Department of Education will assist in lawful diversity efforts, and I stand ready to support that process.”

On Thursday, June 29, a 6-3 majority of the extreme, Republican-controlled Supreme Court voted to dismantle the race-conscious admissions programs at Harvard and University of North Carolina. The decision guts a decades-long precedent that allowed universities to consider students’ backgrounds as one of many factors in the admissions process in order to create diverse, nurturing campuses.
