Frankel Appointed to Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, Will Co-Sponsor Bills to Reduce Gun Violence

Congresswoman Lois Frankel has been appointed to serve on the congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force chaired by Congressman Mike Thompson, and today Frankel will co-sponsor her first bills as representative of Florida’s 22nd Congressional District. Both measures that Frankel is co-sponsoring aim to reduce gun violence.

Frankel will co-sponsor the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act (HR 138), which would restore the federal ban on high capacity magazines and the Gunshow Loophole Closing Act of 2013 (HR 141) which would require criminal background checks for all firearms purchased at gun shows.

“Unfortunately there is no magic wand to end gun violence and gun crime, however there are meaningful steps we can take now to reduce gun violence in South Florida and around the country,” Congresswoman Lois Frankel said. “We have a once in a generation opportunity to get something done to reduce gun violence and that’s why I’m serving on the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and supporting common sense measures that can save lives and make our communities and neighborhoods safer.”

Frankel also submitted a policy recommendation to the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force to require instant background checks to purchase gun ammunition. Senator Richard Blumenthal has said he would introduce a bill that calls for instantaneous background checks for the sale of gun ammunition.

Frankel’s leadership on gun violence prevention issues dates to her time in the Florida Legislature and as West Palm Beach Mayor. As Mayor, Frankel served on the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition, which Mayor Michael Bloomberg co-founded, and Frankel helped lead a successful gun buyback program in West Palm Beach.
