Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-22) announced Alina Carey, a senior at Pinecrest High School, as the winner of Florida’s 22nd Congressional District’s 2015 Congressional Art Competition. The announcement was made at the opening of the exhibit showcasing the artwork of the over 40 high school students who participated in the competition. The exhibit runs from May 8th – May 18th at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Alina’s winning piece of art, a pencil drawing entitled “Family,” will be displayed in an eleven month exhibit in the U.S. Capitol complex along with the winning artwork from each Congressional District across the country. Alina will also be invited to attend an annual awards ceremony at the Capitol in honor of the exhibit in June 2015.
“Congratulations to Alina and all the South Florida students who participated in this year’s competition,” said Frankel. “Thanks to all the parents and teachers for nurturing this creativity. It is inspiring to see so much local talent!”
The Congressional Art Competition is an opportunity to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation. This year, Frankel is serving as Co-Chair for the Congressional Art Competition alongside Pennsylvania Congressman Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson. For Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, the winning piece of art was selected by a panel of local judges including James Brayton Hall, Deputy Director at the Norton Museum of Art; Claire Clum, Director of Education at the Boca Raton Museum of Art; and Paula Gillam, a professor at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. In addition to selecting Alina Carey’s piece as the overall winning work, the judges also recognized “Forks” by Allyson Israel of Nova High School and “Fear of Fowl” by Yu Hua Golnick of Dreyfoos School of the Arts as runner ups. Receiving “Judges Recognition” were Emma Hillman of Dreyfoos School of the Arts for “Water Tower” and Pierce Herrmann of Boca Raton Community High School for “Lookout at the Everglades.”
