Today, Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-22), a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, released the following statement on the Florida Senate Judiciary Committee’s decision not to hold a hearing on SB 68, a controversial bill that would allow individuals with concealed-carry permits to bring guns onto Florida college campuses. This decision makes it very unlikely that the bill will become law.
“Florida's college students and their families can breathe a sigh of relief because of the responsible actions of senate leaders to keep firearms off campuses,” Frankel said. “Let's all work together to find common sense solution to ending gun violence.”
Frankel has been an outspoken opponent of this bill since it was introduced. Recently, she sent a letter signed by all ten Florida Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives to the leaders of both chambers in the Florida legislature urging them to block the measure. In October 2015, she and Rep. Ted Deutch (FL-21) held a press conference at Palm Beach State College’s Lake Worth campus to discuss the gun violence epidemic and urge opposition to this bill.
