Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL21) joins her Democratic colleagues in announcing a fresh vision for America, “A Better Deal: Better Jobs, Better Wages, Better Future.” This ambitious economic agenda shows a renewed Democratic commitment to the hard-working men and women across America who have been left out and left behind for too long.
“Too many families are struggling, feeling they have been left behind in a system that’s rigged against them. They are living paycheck to paycheck and fighting to put food on the table, or send their kids off to college. The American people deserve a better deal that offers a brighter, more secure economic future.” said Frankel.
Democrats will deliver real solutions, lasting economic growth and take significant action to improve the lives of the American people. A Better Deal centers on three core objectives: creating millions more good-paying, full time jobs and raising wages, lowering the cost of living for America’s families, and building an economy that gives every American the tools to succeed in the 21st century.
To start, Democrats are setting out three ambitious new economic initiatives:
1. Good-paying, full-time jobs for 10 million more Americans in the next five years – igniting a new era of investment in America’s workers through a new tax credit for employers to train and hire workers at a good wage, and a massive new national commitment to expanding apprenticeships and paid on-the-job training that advances their skills and careers.
2. Aggressive action to lower the cost of prescription drugs – putting an end to outrageous and unjustified prescription drug price gouging, leveraging the power of Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices, and forcing drug manufactures to open their books and justify cost increases.
3. Cracking down on the monopolies and mergers driving up Americans’ cost of living – put economic power back into the hands of America’s families, confronting the monopolies and merges that hurt competition and workers, decrease consumers’ options, and let everyone from cable companies, to agricultural conglomerates, to airlines drive up Americans’ costs.
For too long special interests have been given special treatment, while hard-working Americans are ignored. The costs of living keep rising, but families’ incomes and wages aren’t keeping up. The first six months of the Trump Administration have exposed the toxic priorities at the core of the Republican agenda, like giving tax cuts for the wealthy and kicking 22 million people off health insurance. The American people deserve better. A Better Deal is exactly what Democrats have to give them.
