Frankel Statement on "Demanding A Vote" on Immigration Reform

Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-22) released the following statement in support of the House Democrats’ “Demand a Vote” petition.

Rep. Frankel said, “The time is long overdue for Congress to pass legislation creating a roadmap to citizenship for the 11 million aspiring Americans living in the shadows of our country.”

Rep. Frankel joined with her Democratic colleagues to bring comprehensive immigration reform to the House floor for a vote on the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act (HR 15).

HR 15 currently has 200 co-sponsors, including three Republican House Members.  HR 15 would:

  • Secure America’s borders;
  • Protect workers;
  • Unite families;
  • Provide an earned pathway to citizenship.

According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, "Effective immigration reform can be a powerful instrument of economic revitalization. By increasing the overall population, and particularly the number of working-age labor force participants, reform can help expand the economy, contribute to higher overall average wages, generate more consumer spending, and spur new demand for residential housing construction. By supporting stronger economic growth, immigration reform can also reduce the federal budget deficit substantially."

A “discharge petition" is a legislative procedure that would enable legislation to come to the House floor for a vote with the signatures of 218 House Members.
