Rep. Frankel Statement on House Passage of Major Policing Reform and Equal Justice Legislation

Today, Rep. Lois Frankel (FL-21) issued the following statement after the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act passed the House by a vote of 236 to 181.

ā€œIā€™m proud to have cast a vote for the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. This legislation encompasses bold, unprecedented reforms to curb police brutality, end racial profiling, and hold police accountable. In this moment of national anguish caused by recent killings and police brutality, my colleagues and I have heard the voices of people here in Palm Beach County and across America calling for major changes to our justice system. This bill will boost good policing and save lives. I urge the U.S. Senate to take up and pass these needed reforms immediately.ā€

Specifically, the legislation:

  • Bans chokeholds;
  • Stops no-knock warrants;
  • Ends the qualified immunity doctrine that is a barrier to holding police officers accountable for wrongful conduct;
  • Combats racial profiling;
  • Mandates data collection;
  • Requires body cameras for federal officers;
  • Increases funding for local police departments to buy body and dashboard cameras; and
  • Establishes new standards for policing.

This bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
