Rep. Frankel Statement on Russian Invasion of Ukraine, Biden Administration Response

West Palm Beach, FL – Today, Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-21) released the following statement in support of President Biden’s announcement of further sanctions and export controls against Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine. The sanctions, which were announced following the President’s meeting with G7 leaders, will be implemented in coordination with NATO and allies from around to world to further limit Russia’s ability to conduct international business, and will have far reaching and long-term impacts on the country.

“Today, like the rest of the international community, I have been watching in horror as Russia carries out an unprovoked attack on a free and democratic Ukraine, marking the greatest threat to democracy, and the safety of our European allies, since World War II. My thoughts are with the people of Ukraine as they defend their country and their home,” said Rep. Frankel. “Putin has deliberately chosen violence over diplomacy and war over peace. The destruction that this war brings will be on his hands. As President Biden said in his remarks this afternoon, Putin’s aggression cannot and will not go unanswered. Make no mistake that the United States, in lockstep with NATO and allies from around the world, will hold Russia accountable for its actions, and the U.S. Congress stands ready to work with President Biden to issue a strong and unified response.”

Overnight, Russia launched an unprovoked, full-scale attack on Ukraine, which has already resulted in dozens of Ukrainian military and civilian casualties. The speed and coordination of the response from the United States, NATO, and allies from around the world to this act of aggression is already far beyond the actions taken during the invasion of Crimea in 2014, and further consequences will likely follow if Russia does not change course.
