Rep. Frankel Statement on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Address to Congress, President Biden’s Response

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-21) released the following statement in response to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s address to the U.S. Congress and President Biden’s announcement in response. In his address, Zelensky expressed gratitude for the overwhelming U.S. support for the Ukrainian people and asked for additional assistance in their fight against the Russian invasion. Later, President Biden delivered a speech to announce an additional $800 million in security assistance being sent to Ukraine.

“President Zelensky showcased the bravery and strength of the Ukrainian people today in a heartbreaking yet inspiring address to the U.S. Congress. I was extremely moved by his words,” said Rep. Frankel. “President Biden has united the free world to punish Putin and support Ukraine in its fight for freedom and democracy. The U.S. has led an unprecedented campaign of crippling global sanctions against Putin and continues to provide crucial military and humanitarian support to Ukraine to stand up to Putin and ensure that dictators around the world see the severe consequences for unspeakable, unprovoked violence.”

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched an unprovoked, full-scale attack on Ukraine, which has resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths, and the mass migration of over three million refugees from Ukraine to other parts of Europe, and beyond.

The United States, in coordination with NATO and allies from around the world, has responded to these acts of aggression with crippling economic sanctions and increased economic, humanitarian, and security assistance to Ukraine. The assistance President Biden announced today is part of the $13.6 billion emergency package passed by Congress last week.
