Veterans who were exposed to environmental hazards and toxic substances (including burn pits) during their service, and suffer from related illnesses like cancer, bronchitis, asthma, and other respiratory disorders have until August 9^th, 2023 to claim 12 months of backdated compensation. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) encourages all Veterans who believe they were affected by toxic substance exposure to apply for these benefits, regardless of their discharge date. Veterans only need to submit their intent to file by August 9^th to receive backdated compensation and can complete the rest of the filing process later in the year. There is no deadline to apply for ongoing compensation.

“Many of our Veterans were exposed to environmental hazards and toxic substances during their service, risking their lives for our freedom,” said Rep. Frankel. “I was proud to support the Honoring Our PACT Act last Congress, which provides Veterans with the health care and benefits they deserve.”
