Rep. Frankel Statement on Department of Education Issuing Updated Guidelines to Combat Sexual Assault, Sex-Based Discrimination in Our Schools

Washington, DC – Today, Representative Lois Frankel (FL-22) released the following statement after the Department of Education issued updated guidelines for federal enforcement of Title IX, the federal civil rights law aimed at prohibiting sex-based discrimination in schools receiving federal funding.

“Every student should be able to learn in a safe school environment, without fear of sexual harassment, assault, or discrimination,” said Rep Frankel. “The new regulations issued today by the Biden Administration are a huge step forward in our fight to advance gender equality in schools and on campuses. I am grateful to President Biden and Education Secretary Cardona for hearing our calls and issuing regulations that will restore and expand protections for survivors, keep women safe on campus, and clarify protections for pregnant and parenting students.”

The new guidelines undo harmful Trump administration policies and strengthen protection for sexual assault and harassment survivors, protect against discrimination based on pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions, and prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics.
