Washington, DC – Today, Representative Lois Frankel (FL-22) issued the following statement in response to President Trump signing an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education. “The Trump Administration’s dismantling of the Department of Education is a devastating blow to public education—one of the cornerstones of our democracy that fosters an informed and engaged citizenry,” said Rep. Frankel. “Public schools provide every child, regardless of background, with access to opportunities that enable them to succeed, contribute to society, and drive economic growth by preparing a skilled, innovative workforce.” “This executive action is not only an illegal defiance of a congressionally authorized law but also threatens serious consequences for Palm Beach County schools and communities across the nation.” Recent reporting has shown closing the Department could cost Palm Beach County Schools at least $150 million per year, being used for teacher training, educating special needs students, and providing extra assistance to schools with a high percentage of low-income students, who account for about 100,000 of the district's 189,000 students.
