Rep. Frankel Statement as Israel, Hamas Reach Agreement for Return of the Hostages, Ceasefire

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-22) released the following statement after Israel and Hamas reached an agreement for a 42-day ceasefire along with the release of 33 hostages. The deal lays the groundwork for an eventual permanent end in fighting and the release of every remaining hostage, including Americans, in Hamas captivity.

“The news that Israel and Hamas have reached an agreement for a 42-day ceasefire and the release of 33 hostages fills the hearts of many, including mine, with immense relief and joy,” said Rep. Frankel. “The thought of these hostages soon reuniting with their families after enduring unimaginable terror is a moment of profound celebration. This milestone is a testament to the power of hope, diplomacy, and unwavering American leadership. I extend my deepest gratitude to President Biden, his team, and everyone who worked tirelessly to make this a reality.”

“While we rejoice in this progress, our mission remains unfinished,” continued Rep. Frankel. “We are steadfast in our commitment to bringing every hostage home, ensuring Israel’s security, providing humanitarian relief to Palestinians, defeating Hamas, and building a lasting foundation for peace in the Middle East. Today, I embrace this incredible step forward with heartfelt gratitude and renewed determination.”

The agreement is reported to contain the following structure:

Phase 1: 42-Day Ceasefire

Israel will:

  • Withdraw from populated areas of the Gaza Strip and the Netzarim

Corridor (dividing northern and southern Gaza).

  • Allow Palestinians to return to the North, with vehicles passing through x-ray scanners operated by Egyptian or Qatari companies.
  • Remain on the Philadelphi corridor and the buffer zone along the Israeli border.
  • Release hundreds of Palestinian detainees, including security prisoners, but no terrorists who participated in the October 7 attacks.
  • Enable the entry of 600 humanitarian trucks per day into Gaza.

Hamas will:

  • Free 33 hostages, including women, children, men over 55, and the sick. Israeli officials believe that most of this group are alive.
  • Halt its attacks on Israel.

Phases 2 and 3

  • Phases 2 and 3 would presumably end the war and see the release of the remaining hostages, a withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, a permanent ceasefire, and the beginning of Gaza’s reconstruction.
