Rep. Frankel Opposes Republican Default Package

Extreme MAGA Legislation Will Devastate Everyday Americans

Washington, DC – Today, Representative Lois Frankel (FL-22) released the following statement after opposing the Republicans’ default plan.

“Make no mistake, extremists in this Congress are trying to hold us hostage,” said Rep. Frankel. “Republicans have given us a ransom note: Choose between wrecking our economy or wrecking our families. That means losing jobs and our retirement funds, or inflicting cruel pain on American families: more children going to bed hungry, more parents without child care, more women dying in childbirth, more veteran suicides, more evictions, and more carbon in the air. Democrats are ready to act now to prevent a default on our debt and responsibly invest in America to lower costs and create better jobs.”

If this dangerous bill becomes law, it would wreak havoc on Florida by:

  • Eliminating preschool and child care slots for 17,000 children.
  • Threatening food assistance for 833,000 Floridians, including vital nutritional assistance for 108,000 women, infants, and children.
  • Lengthening Social Security and Medicare Assistance Wait Times for 5.4 million seniors.
  • Threatening Medical Care for 566,500 Veterans.
  • Raising Housing Costs for 29,500 Floridians.
  • Making college more expensive for over 474,000 Florida students.

The bill passed the House by a vote of 217-215. It now heads to the Senate, where Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has proclaimed it “dead on arrival.” President Biden has also pledged to veto the bill, should it reach his desk.
