West Palm Beach, FL – Today, Representative Frankel (FL-22) released the following statement after pledging her support for the Access to Family Building Act, which would establish a nationwide right to IVF treatment. Frankel also hosted a press conference in Washington, D.C. last week with other House Democrats to express their support for the bill and their commitment to defending reproductive freedom. “Reproductive freedom means that women must be able to access the health care they need to control their own lives and futures. That means women, not politicians, should be in charge of whether, when, and how to start or grow their families. This includes access to birth control, access to abortion, and access to IVF,” said Rep. Frankel. “More and more families across the country are turning to fertility treatments like IVF, which is why I’m supporting this legislation to protect access to IVF nationwide in the face of these extreme Republican attacks.” In vitro fertilization, also called IVF, is an alternative pregnancy treatment for women who struggle to conceive children, during which a woman’s mature eggs are collected from ovaries and fertilized in a lab. IVF also can be used to prevent passing on genetic conditions to a child. 125 House Republicans support legislation that would define life at the moment of fertilization, opening up IVF providers to a variety of legal liabilities and jeopardizing future access to IVF nationwide.
