Today, Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-22), a staunch defender of reproductive rights, released a statement opposing the Florida for Life Act (H.B. 865). This bill in the Florida House of Representatives would make performing an abortion or operating an abortion clinic a felony punishable by up to 30 years in jail. “Criminalizing doctors for performing what are currently regulated, legal medical procedures denies women the ability to make their own personal health care decisions,” Frankel said. “No woman should have to call a lawmaker to determine whether or not to go through with a pregnancy.” The bill passed the Florida House Criminal Justice Subcommittee on January 25, 2016 and is currently being considered by the Florida House Justice Appropriations Subcommittee.
